Use Raised Beds to Save Time, Money & Effort

Sandy or clay soil can be a huge challenge when you are creating a garden. If you want to save your back and pocketbook, build raised beds as an alternative.

A substantial advantage to using a raised bed is that they allow you to use any type of soil you want. This means you can plant and grow many plants that wouldn’t normally thrive. Another advantage is raised beds drain better, even if they are filled with less than optimum soil.

A few things to remember when building raised garden beds: Construct them to a height that is comfortable for you to work in but remember that the higher the bed, the more materials and soil you will need. Don’t build your beds wider than you can reach halfway across. A width of 6 feet is usually good because most gardeners can reach 3 feet from both sides. If you are putting in a flower garden, treated wood is a good choice; however, don’t use treated wood for a vegetable garden as toxic compounds are used and can leach into the soil and be absorbed by the produce. A great alternative is landscaping timbers made from recycled plastic – it looks like wood and resists rotting.
